The NEC has agreed to set up a major, systematic, political lobbying operation around the May elections in England, Scotland and Wales to raise PCS's issues with candidates.
The Make Your Vote Count campaign will allow us to directly ask candidates in elections about their views on PCS's core campaigning issues of job cuts, privatisation, loss of public services and national pay. We will then publish their responses to members ahead of the elections to help inform them when they cast their vote on 3 May in: - .England; in most councils outside London .Scotland; for the Scottish Parliament and councils .Wales; for the Welsh Assembly only.
It is hoped that all candidates standing for election will be asked their views. This will also be accompanied by local lobbying and campaigning activity, letters from members and hustings for candidates, particularly in areas where we have a high membership density or major issues facing PCS members. The results will then be published locally under the banner of "Make Your Vote Count".
Materials, templates and support will be provided by PCS nationally and via regional offices, where
Make Your Vote Count coordinators have been appointed to support the campaign. It is also intended to organise media work around the campaign to maximise its impact. We hope to approach all candidates across the political spectrum, including independent candidates, (with the exception of those standing for racist/fascist parties of the far right). We have also arranged to utilise the anti- fascist fortnight (24 March to 8 April) to help stimulate activity. Events were also planned in Northern Ireland around the Northern Ireland Assembly election held on 7 March.
